Performance Samples

PERFPERC – VOLUME II

Performance-Sourced Percussion

Perfperc – Volume II continues the exploration of percussion libraries built using multi-samples captured from repeated performance phrases. The library features more than 15 instruments (many of which with a world percussion leaning) including a djembe, frame drum, conga set, cajon, udu, a large selection of shakers, and more. Some of the instruments have been recorded with multiple stage positions as well, allowing users to stack and interplay between them.

Produced with a heavy focus on consistency (that exceeds even that of Volume I) and timbral cohesion across the wide dynamic range (up to 15 dynamics), Perfperc – Volume II‘s performance-sourced repetition approach offers a percussion solution with a natural, lively connection between notes and smooth, playable uniformity in the velocity response. On selected idiomatic patches and articulations, playable rolls were recorded – very fast, performance-sourced samples captured “in motion” that have a natural “blur” to them) – which trigger in automatically if you play really fast.

  • Articulations
    • Performance-sourced hits with up to 15 dynamics and up to 3 repetition speeds including:
      • Playable rolls (the fastest repetition speed) on selected idiomatic patches and articulations
      • Multiple stage positions (on select patches)
    • Bonus material (rainstick FX)
  • Instruments
    • Cajon
    • Conga Set (three congas: low, medium, and high)
    • Djembe
    • Frame Drum
    • Gong Drum
    • Taiko
    • Tambourine
    • Tupan
    • Udu
    • Vibraslap
    • Shakers

  • Recorded in a hall with close and decca mic positions
  • 48kHz / 24bit
  • NCW-compressed, ~2.98 GB total
  • Built for Kontakt 5.8.1 and above – full, retail version of Kontakt required
  • Download via Continuata

NOTE ON DELAY: this library has a moderately delayed response when playing (80 ms based on the close mics) to further the cohesion and liveliness. The library is optimized for this delay amount.

Delay

The library is globally delayed at 80 ms (to the close mic) to further the cohesion and liveliness. The library is optimized for this delay amount.. Set your MIDI track to this number, quantize, and you will be on-time. If you’d like, the TIGHTEN button will change everything from 80 ms to 20 ms. The library isn’t optimized for being played like this, and while it works for MIDI input, it is suggested to use the full 80 ms delay when doing playback.

Library Limitations

  • The library has a delayed response of 80 ms (based on the close mic). Set your track delay to -80 ms. The library is optimized for this delay. The delay aids with cohesion and subtle “in-between” elements which are a byproduct of performance-sourced repetition sampling. The library is playable live, but may require some getting used to if you’re not accustomed to playing percussion with a delay. The trade-off is entirely worth it. However, there is also a “tighten” knob which brings the delay to 20 ms (based on the close mic). The library isn’t meant to be used like this, nor was it built to sound like this – but the option is available to you.
  • There is a mild level of ambience-bleed / “whoosh” / pre-note on the attacks if they’re played in standalone isolation or you’re using mostly the decca mics. This is a byproduct of pulling samples from repetition performances in an ambient room and is somewhat alleviated by a script-driven modulation of the attack curve.
